My name is Trai Orthal and my piece is titled "Colleus Occuladia." It began as a large, damaged paint pour canvas I found at a thrift store. The organic burgundy forms of the paint pour reminded me of a mermaid silhouette evening gown, so naturally I imagined it as one of my eyeball-headed alien women attending a garden-themed Met Gala-style event. Occasionally, my aliens are in what I have nicknamed "Medusa Mode," where the veins of the eye that usually trail back and down their spines take on a Medusa snake hair quality, usually denoting a sense of agency and empowerment. Her gown is "Colleus" themed, one of my favorite plants, covered in green and magenta canvas leaves that I've hand cut and painted and hand laid rhinestones.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Trai Orthal

Queer, nonbinary, surreal 2d/3d traditional and digital artist. Creating is akin to breathing for me. My art is a colorful exploration of observation and an exercise in twisting nature and nostalgia into the beautifully unnerving and seemingly unlovable, and then finding those out there that love them regardless.
