Chasity Gunn -
Girl: it's a term used to describe your daughter, the third grader with ponytails. It's a way girlfriends signal that they have a juicy secret to share. It's also a term used to refer to black women, regardless of age or position. Historically, it has been a term to dehumanize black women and remove their given names. Today, it can be one of many microaggressions that black women experience, especially in the workplace. Through performance ethnography, Chasity Gunn will examine the term throughout history and challenge our beliefs of what it means to be a "girl."
